ALM’s Corporate Counsel Reports on Which Law Firms Represent America’s Biggest Companies
ALM’s Corporate Counsel, a leading publication for general counsel and in-house attorneys, reported the results of its 2012 “Who Represents America’s Biggest Companies” survey in its October 2012 issue.
The annual survey is based on how many times a law firm is mentioned as a firm that is retained by a Fortune 100 company for various litigation services.
In the overall list of total mentions, the leading firms were:
• Fish & Richardson (16 mentions)
• Alston & Bird (15)
• Morgan Lewis (15)
The report also included rankings in five specific categories:
• Contracts Litigation (#1 was Baker Hostetler and Smith Moore, with four mentions each)
• IP Litigation (Fish & Richardson, 11)
• Labor Litigation (Littler Mendelson, eight)
• Patent Prosecution (Banner & Witcoff and Brooks Kushman, six)
• Torts Litigation (Bryan Cave, six)
To determine which law firms represent America’s largest corporations, Corporate Counsel searched public records to find outside counsel used by companies in the Fortune 100 for corporate, contracts litigation, labor litigation, torts litigation and intellectual property.
“Four years after the crash, in some ways the in-house/outside firm relationship is changing, but in many ways it is still the same,” said Corporate Counsel Editor in Chief Anthony Paonita. “The economic crisis and sluggish recovery has at least succeeded in focusing the attention of outside counsel on how to best serve their clients and deliver value for what they bill – if for no other reason than to simply hold on to them. So in maybe an odd way, the downturn has led to closer legal department–outside counsel relationships.”
