Bill Granting Employment Benefits to Same-Sex Partners Passes Senate Committee
Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009

The U.S. Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee has passed the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, which would allow federal employees to give their same-sex partners health insurance, life insurance, government pensions, and other employment related benefits and obligations that are available to heterosexual married couples.
The Committee approval came less than a month after a similar bill passed the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform by a vote of 23-12. The Senate approved its own version of the bill by a vote of 8 to1.
