California State Legislature Approves Stronger Anti Piracy Bill

The California State Assembly and Senate have passed AB 819, a legislation that imposes double fines for copyright and trademark infringement. The enrolled version of the bill now awaits Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature.
This bill doubles the fines in existing law for violations related to piracy or counterfeiting of specified marks registered with the Secretary of State or registered on the Principal Register of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”).
This bill would also require a court to order restitution when the person has been convicted of violating certain other provisions of law relating to the manufacture or sale…
