U.S. Senate Amends Homeland Security Bill to Include E-Verify Database System in Checking Immigration Status of Prospective Employees

By a vote of 53 to 44, with three members not voting, the U.S. Senate has approved legislation to make permanent the use of an electronic system for employers to check the documentation of prospective employees.
This measure is part of an amendment to the $42.9 billion appropriations bill of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) for fiscal year 2010. This amendment, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Sessions, that would extend the use of a federal database to check the work eligibility of employees called E-Verify.
